Kasama ka sa Kalayaan: Celebrating Freedom and Unity at UBE Fest 2024
On June 15, 2024, the serene city of Wiesbaden transformed into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration as it played host to UBE Fest 2024. This year’s theme, “Kasama ka sa Kalayaan” (You are part of the Freedom), resonated with over 15,000 attendees from all over Europe, highlighting a shared commitment to freedom and unity. Presented by Philnity e.V. and supported by the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, the Department of Tourism, Love the Philippines, and The Filipino Catholic Community Bistum Limburg, the festival was a testament to the enduring partnership between the Philippines and Germany, marking their 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
A Grand Opening: Ube Fest 2024
The event commenced with a dazzling costume parade that showcased the rich cultural heritage of both the Philippines and Germany. Participants proudly donned traditional Filipino attire, such as the elegant Barong Tagalog, the Maria Clara dress, and various Filipiniana gowns. The parade also featured German classics like the Lederhosen and Dirndl, symbolizing the fusion of these two distinct cultures. The Philippine Consul General in Frankfurt, Marie Yvette Banzon-Abalos, delivered the opening remarks, expressing her pride in the event’s success and highlighting the symbolism of UBE (purple yam) as the “new national color,” combining the blue and red hues of the Philippine flag. This notion of unity and diversity set the tone for the day’s festivities.
A Celebration of Culture and Tradition
The festival was a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture, featuring an array of captivating performances. The UP Concert Chorus set the tone with their performance of the Philippine National Anthem, “Lupang Hinirang”, and the German National Anthem, “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit”. This was followed by a soulful prayer led by Fr. Francis Ofrancia of FCC, World International Ministry, and Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach. The Filipino Catholic Community Bistum Limburg Choir also uplifted the audience with their heartfelt songs of praise.
Award-winning Filipino bartender Dennis Barela, from Spain, also captivated the crowd with his impressive mixology skills. “Lalaine and Friends” and “The Youth of the Filipino Catholic Community” showcased traditional Philippine dances, with a unique blend of UBE-inspired moves adding an exciting twist that delighted the audience.
The Arnis exhibition by “Agos Kamay,” led by Grandmaster Carlos Pulanco, was also a standout feature of the festival. This performance beautifully demonstrated the intricacy of the martial art, known for its use of sticks, knives, and empty-hand techniques. A particular highlight was the showcase of Modern Arnis, a contemporary adaptation of the traditional form, emphasizing the adaptability and cultural depth of Filipino martial arts.
These performances underscored the enduring relevance and global appeal of our culture, making them all memorable part of the festival.
Literary and Artistic Showcase
The festival also included an engaging talk, organized by The Philippine Literary Circle Europe, featuring book readings, spoken poetry, and interviews. Esteemed authors such as Dorie Reyes Polo, Andreas Schmitz, Saskia Zimmerman, Maria Renker, Al Joseph Lumen, and Maya Butalid shared their works and explored the significance of Filipino literature within the European context. This literary segment served as a prelude to the upcoming Frankfurter Book Fair 2025, where the Philippines will be honored as the Guest of Honor Country, highlighting the growing influence and appreciation of Filipino literature in Europe.

Food stalls offered a delectable array of UBE-themed products, ranging from savory dishes to sweet treats, alongside other beloved Filipino delicacies.
